  • Amazon’s new Lab126 group focuses on agentic AI for advanced robotics applications.
  • Team develops “physical AI” to enable robots to process natural language commands.
  • Amazon’s Alexa+ and cloud unit also advance agentic AI for consumer devices.

Amazon announced on Wednesday the creation of a new group within its Lab126 division, the Silicon Valley-based research and development unit known for creating the Kindle, Echo, and other consumer devices. This team will focus on developing agentic artificial intelligence (AI), a technology designed to perform complex, multistep tasks autonomously, moving beyond the capabilities of traditional chatbot and image generators.

Based in Lab126, the group aims to build ‘Agentic AI frameworkfit for Amazon’s robotics by focusing on physical AI. It is claimed by Amazon that, by the second half of 2023, robots will respond to spoken language, enabling them to help in different capacities. The new development will make Amazon’s warehouses more efficient, as robots can perform various tasks by interacting intuitively with people.

The initiative coincides with what’s happening in the industry, since more companies are now interested in AI agents that complete challenging tasks for users. Amazon has worked in this area for some time now; earlier this year, its AI lab introduced a web based chat agent and the cloud division has set up a team focused on agentic AI. Furthermore, the introduction of Alexa+ in March reflects Amazon’s plan to use AI as a key element in all its services.

Amazon is planning to make its robotics and consumer products more advanced with agentic AI. The work done by Lab126 could make warehouse robotics more efficient, flexible and suitable to different needs. Amazon’s allocation of funds to AI-robotics experts proves that it wants to succeed in physical AI applications and may result in a new approach to how its devices and services respond to users and the world around them.
